The eye retains an image of what it sees, even after an object is gone. If an image changes too rapidly, our eyes simply blend the images into one. When the thaumatrope spins fast enough, we perceive the two images as one.
Thaumatropes were created in the early 1800s. They formed an important foundation for the creation of modern animation.
