Thaumatrope

The eye retains an image of what it sees, even after an object is gone. If an image changes too rapidly, our eyes simply blend the images into one. When the thaumatrope spins fast enough, we perceive the two images as one.

Thaumatropes were created in the early 1800s. They formed an important foundation for the creation of modern animation.

What is a Mess Kit?

Mess Kits are single-serving experiments that allow kids to explore scientific concepts at their own pace. Visitors are encouraged to complete as many as they want! See all Mess Kits.
