Chromatography is a method of separating mixtures based on the solubility of the different elements. In this activity, some of the ink colors are more attracted to the paper, and others are more attracted to the water. The ones attracted to the paper move more slowly up the paper.
There are many kinds of chromatography used in laboratories, including thin-layer, liquid, and gas chromatography. They are used to separate synthetic chemicals and natural products for analysis and purification.
Mess Kits are single-serving experiments that allow kids to explore scientific concepts at their own pace. Visitors are encouraged to complete as many as they want! See all Mess Kits.
